Real is a big deal

“To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.”
– e.e. cummings

Messages come at us thick and fast throughout our lives. Some resonate or stick with us and guide our thoughts, words and actions, some inspire or awaken new possibilities, some offend or challenge what we deeply believe or value, while others fly around and subtly influence us as individuals and communities.

One that we hear often is ‘Fake it till you make it’. I’m thinking that fostering ‘Real is a big deal’ instead of ‘Fake it till you make it’ may provide us with connection filled opportunities as we explore the possibilities, discover potential and act authentically. Rather than feeling alone and isolated, putting on and wearing masks, or feeling like a fraud or we’re going to get caught out, we can remind ourselves and others that having the courage to be yourself within the complexity of our personal or professional interactions and experiences is when we make a big difference in our own and others lives. We matter, not when, if, should, but now and always.

“We all wear masks, and the time comes when we cannot remove them without removing some of our own skin.”
– André Berthiaume

The picture at the beginning of this post reminded me of the way that many of us can feel within our 21st Century World. Pressures, work, aspirations, 24/7 technology, family responsibilities and the list goes on, can see our minds racing to keep up. Creating some time and space in our busy lives to be mindful of how ‘real is a big deal’ or ‘faking it till you make it’ are unfolding for ourselves and the communities in which we live and work brings greater awareness and opportunities. We can then realign daily thoughts, words and actions so that we deepen connection to self, others and the world around us while ‘being the change we wish to see in the world’.

“You have a unique gift to offer this world. Be true to yourself, be kind to yourself, read and learn about everything that interests you and keep away from people who bring you down. When you treat yourself kindly and respect the uniqueness of those around you, you will be giving this world an amazing gift… YOU!”
