Why L.E.A.D.ership?

I have always been drawn to a particular quote I saw many years ago. I came across it when I was looking for resources for a school social justice group I was facilitating. The quote just intrigued me and made me think. I also just felt like it connected to what I was hoping to offer through the experiences the students were exposed to and also more importantly to my own (and our shared) human journey of potential. It was:

“We live in a world where virtually no problem can be solved by individual action.

And yet…

In our world no problem can be solved unless individuals act!”

What I really loved about it was the honouring of complexity. Like all quotes they can be interpreted in many different ways by different people but this one spoke to me about empowering daily thoughts, words and most importantly actions, with the purpose of making a difference in our own and others lives. This purpose can then drive our choices as we navigate the successes and challenges that are inevitable on our individual and shared journeys, with all the differing levels of complexity that has to be experienced.

This is why L.E.A.D.ership is so important to us and why L.E.A.D. with Courage™ is Explore Discover Act’s core Program. We believe:

“Leadership is a purposeful journey that utilises a combination of developing skills, attitude and behaviours, and is courageously practiced daily by individuals and groups through their thoughts, words and actions.”

Through our program we examine how, “Leadership is action, not position” (Donald H. McGannon). It’s not a badge to wear or a special chair to sit in, it is ongoing choices we make through our interactions with self, others and the world around us, as we Explore the possibilities, Discover potential and Act authentically. Our vision remains, ‘Informed, connected and empowered individuals believing deeply in their own and others potential’. As students, teachers and school communities become involved in our program they become a part of a community that believes:

  • In exploring the possibilities, discovering potential and acting authentically.
  • That our daily thoughts, words and actions matter.
  • That our journey will involve both successes and challenges, remembering that, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts” – Winston Churchill.
  • We are all capable of making a difference in our own and others lives.
  • We are all in this together!

Our school programs begin for 2014 on Monday. It is a privilege to be able to support the learning and leadership journey of so many inspiring students, teachers and school communities. We look forward to this continuing journey and all that it will involve. Coming back to ‘Why L.E.A.D.ership?’ reminds us of why we love doing what we do. We wish everyone a connection and potential filled year.
