Am I Doing It Right?

How often do we let inaction creep in because we are evaluating through a lens of, ‘Am I doing it right?’

This week I was facilitating for a group that were experiencing many new challenges. Throughout the week the kids were given a variety of tasks and the responsibility to create things that emphasised exploring the possibilities. They were also provided with opportunities to test their comfort zones in some adventurous activities. During the first few experiences in particular there were some worried questions relating to, ‘Am I doing it right?’ These questions were sincere and coming from a place I think we all know, what if what I’m doing isn’t right/good enough/doesn’t turn out/makes me look different or silly? (the list obviously doesn’t end there as we could all substitute our own versions in). Unfortunately though these types of personal or group evaluations drive inaction rather than embracing an opportunity to explore the possibilities, discover potential and act authentically.

Each individual in this great group of kids experienced various successes and challenges throughout the inspiring week. We were able to spend time reflecting on where inaction crept in through feelings of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ ways of doing a particular task or engaging in an experience. The group also explored the difference between asking for advice or skills that can assist individuals or the group in their journey of potential, compared with being frozen in seeking validation of doing something ‘right’. Creativity and appropriate risk taking looks, sounds and feels slightly different for us all but it is something that if embraced assists us as we navigate our journey of potential.

At the end of the week we were reflecting as a group on the journey we had all been on together. Part of the reflection involved summing up the experience in as few words as possible. Many of the kids used words to show how much fun they had or the connections they made but one really stuck out to me. One of the participants used the words ‘own style’. He then spoke about how embracing and celebrating the creativity and appropriate risk taking process can be ‘scary’ at times but what he achieved reinforced to him why it was important to keep exploring the possibilities, discovering potential and acting authentically. He also spoke about how being in a group that were all in this process together and supported each other when obstacles or challenges arose made it so much easier to courageously practise his own style.

Consider this creativity and appropriate risk taking process within your own journey of potential, when you were growing up, within the learning process, in your home, workplace or community setting? When does, ‘Am I doing it right’ creep in and drive inaction for you or those in your spheres of influence?

“Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Write a good one.” – Brad Paisley

Here’s to 2013, with whatever adventures, successes and challenges were navigated during our individual and shared journeys of potential. During New Year celebrations, individuals, families and communities can be filled with hope and inspiration as they envision new opportunities, experiences and deepening connection to self, others and the world around us through the future choices they may make. This hope and inspiration then needs action to accompany it. Our mantra for 2014 is Choose Connection and Contribution, as we continue to Explore the possibilities, Discover potential and Act authentically. What will guide your daily thoughts, words and most importantly actions over the coming 12 months?

Here are just a few of our favourite quotes to reflect on as the New Year begins;

“May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.” – Nelson Mandela

“100% of the shots you don’t take don’t go in.” – Wayne Gretzky

“Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it.” – Old Chinese Proverb

“If you think you’re too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room.” – Dame Anita Roddick

“The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

All the best as you make choice after choice this year that open doors for you to make a difference in your own and others lives in 2014. May our journeys this year continue to foster individual and collective mindfulness of our ability to ‘be the change we wish to see in the world’ through empowered daily thoughts, words and action.
