Merry Christmas

Just wanted to wish the amazing Explore Discover Act staff, our inspiring clients and valued members of the Explore Discover Act community (that’s YOU) a Merry Christmas. May this holiday time be filled with connection – to self, having time to reflect on and celebrate a potential filled 2012, to others, surrounded by family, friends, love, support and moments of joy, and to the world around you, through a shared awareness and appreciation of what is most important to us in the global village.

Christmas is forever, not for just one day, for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf. The good you do for others is good you do yourself. ~Norman Wesley Brooks

“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”

-‐ Helen Keller

You may have seen a TV ad lately that is encouraging individuals to visit the Do Something Near You website. In the ad Dr. Karl explains the scientifically proved benefits of helping others. It makes you feel good! We would all have experienced this ourselves, when we do something for others, whether it is big or small, we feel good as well as the benefits experienced by the other person.

This campaign reminds us of a great saying, ‘Think Global – Act Local’. We can build our awareness and connection to self, others and the world around us, near and far away, then lead through positive daily thoughts and actions wherever we may be. Finding ways to make a difference helps us all ‘be the change we wish to see in the world’ and honours the gifts and talents that each of us is given.

“What you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say”.

-‐ Ralph Waldo Emerson

If you visit the website you can type in your postcode and it will list organisations and initiatives that individuals can become involved with in their local area. This service is creating a pathway for people to be able to give of their time and energy within the local community. Whether you are interested in sporting groups, environmental groups, social justice, animal welfare and the list goes on, opportunities can be viewed and acted upon. 713 million hours of voluntary work was undertaken in Australia in 2006 (2006 National Voluntary Study – Australian Bureau of Statistics), so many individuals and groups working towards ‘being the change’.

Discovering pathways and opportunities to take action can take many forms. The simplest form of everyday giving is the respect that we choose to show to every person that we come into contact with. It is so powerful to simply smile, trying not to label or judge others before you even have a chance to connect with them, engage fully and really listen, taking responsibility for our thoughts, words and actions.

Start here, our attitude affects all of our interactions with others, and then confidently find networks or groups that are also passionate about making a difference, at home, school or in the community. Keep ‘being the change you wish to see in the world’.
